Dr. Bette Gray - Alberta Education

Our class was joined by Dr. Bette Gray via Video Conference today adding a Provincial Leadership perspective on our leadership discussions. Clear communication was evident from the beginning of our time together. Dr. Bette Gray shared many aspects related to her ministry's policy-making. Using a Kingdon Multiple Streams Model, she invited the class to consider a Convergence Window related to IT in Education was within sight.

This model considers a Problem Stream, a corresponding Policy Stream, and a Political Stream. Our class was invited to consider examples today that fit each stream and to consider the associated framing challenges, and policy challenges with each one.

I was able to connect much of our discussion to both school and district levels as well. I was also able to connect to the idea of Policy Entrepreneurialism - a thirst to influence policy, to find a way in.

Perhaps the moment I connect to most, in fact to the extent I could not wait to share the simplicity, was when Dr. Gray identified one single criteria for authentic leadership...

...an ability to change culture.

What an effective enduring understanding related to leadership: reculturing understood.

I very much appreciate today's opportunity, to be a part of this discussion!
